Expensely vs Wave: which is right for you?
Comparison pages on the internet have a problem: they're written by the company being compared, and they always conclude that the writer is the best choice. This is also a comparison page written by Expensely, so it has the same bias. We've tried to compensate by being specific about who should pick Wave and being honest about the trade-offs. If at the end of this page you decide Wave is right for you — that's a fine outcome. Both tools are professionally built; the right call depends on your specific job.
Who Wave Accounting (now Wave by H&R Block) is
Wave is a long-running, generous-free-tier accounting product for very small businesses, originally Canadian and now owned by H&R Block. It covers invoicing, basic accounting, receipt capture (on the Pro tier), and adds payments and payroll as paid add-ons. Wave is famously beloved by US/Canadian freelancers and solopreneurs for letting them run a simple business without a software bill.
Best-for callout
Pick Expensely if: you are anywhere outside North America (especially Pakistan, MENA, South Asia), you need real OCR and AI insights, you operate in multiple currencies, or you have a small team that needs roles and approvals.

Both free tiers are strong, but they’re strong at different things. Wave Free is great for invoicing + basic books. Expensely Free is great for OCR + AI-assisted expense tracking. If you need OCR, Expensely is free; Wave is $16/mo.

Honest pros of Wave
- Genuinely free core product with no time limit.
- Excellent invoicing module — Wave’s strongest feature.
- Integrated payment processing in US/Canada (paid).
- Loved by US/Canadian freelancers and accountants.
- Basic double-entry accounting under the hood.
- Good for service businesses doing 10–20 invoices/mo.
What Expensely does better
- OCR is included on every Expensely plan including Free. Wave OCR (Receipts) requires the Pro plan ($16/mo).
- Voice entry — not available in Wave.
- AI anomaly detection and forecasts — Wave reports are basic.
- Multi-currency on every plan with live FX. Wave’s multi-currency support is limited.
- Built for users outside US/Canada. Wave doesn’t serve many markets well.
- Team plan with roles and approvals. Wave’s collaboration is minimal.
- Pakistan-specific features (Urdu OCR, PKR-first multi-currency, local categories).
Migrating from Wave
Export your Wave transaction history as CSV (Reports → Account Transactions → Export). Import into Expensely; we map Wave’s categories. Wave invoices and customer records don’t come over — Expensely doesn’t handle invoicing today. If you need both invoicing and expense tracking, run Wave for invoicing and Expensely for expenses; they coexist cleanly.
